In the rugged, authentic heart of Chianti, a far cry from the rolling postcard hills, lies Barbischio, where you will find L'Osteria il Papavero. The indoor spaces are the original rooms of an ancient Locanda, a historic lodging house at the foot of a medieval castle; downstairs for eating, upstairs for sleeping. Later the space was transformed into a shop, the fulcrum of village life, where between 1800 and 1900, hearings were held for petty crimes (such as theft of chickens or fruit from trees) and on holidays the villagers would gather for a glass of wine and a game of cards.
